So ideas around the chapter scene 2 jumped a bit from the start. You can set up a narrative challenge that has to be met somehow, and so also your story arc, and then jump into in media res for the next stage of the yarn.
It’s also fun trying to think of ways to evolve the storyline innit.
If you think about it, if you start in media res, you’re at the challenge point of the old story arc, and you can tell the story explaining how your characters got there.
How about, scene 3 starts: Two tribespeople are under the hull of a boat at sea. They don’t say much. Maybe a time-lapse montage kicks in as they shift about restlessly in their cages. At first they’re sick as dogs. They dont move about much for a while. Then they start to stir. The time-lapse montage slows down as the tribespeople are sitting upright in cages made of iron, which they can just about do.
One of them would say to the other, something like, ‘I think there was a bear in this thing before me.’
The other one wouldn’t say very much at all for a while. Then he would be like, ‘how many major errors of judgement did we make in the last 48 hours?’
There would be a bit of a pause. The other tribesperson would be like, ‘more than one.’
